چکیده

The last few decades have shown that analytical chemistry and environmental chemistry are “conjoined twins”. Neither can move significantly forward without the contribution and support of the other discipline. But in their conjoined development both disciplines have contributed much to our knowledge of environmental pollution, to the understanding of environmental processes, and to the development of measures and strategies to reduce contamination. Complementary to the following book chapters that focus on the occurrence and behavior of different classes of polar pollutants in the water cycle, this chapter provides an overview of the recent status of the other half of the “conjoined twins”, the analytical methods to determine these polar pollutants. This subject could easily be the topic of an independent book. Condensing it to one chapter requires considerable selectivity. Therefore, analytical strategies and approaches to the trace analysis of polar pollutants from environmental samples are outlined rather than described in detail.

Development of a comprehensive analytical method for semi-volatile organic compounds in sediments by using an automated identification and quantification system with a GC-MS database.

A comprehensive analytical method for nearly 1000 semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC) in sediments has been developed using an automated identification and quantification system with a GC-MS database. The results of recovery tests using model compounds, which comprise of 119 non-polar to polar compounds, showed that the method can quantitatively analyze most SVOC, except for very polar subs...

Methodology for non-target screening of sewage sludge using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry

To investigate the wide range of pollutants occurring in sewage sludge, an analytical method for comprehensive non-target screening is needed. To the best of our knowledge, no procedures currently exist for the full screening of organic contaminants in sewage sludge, which is the ultimate goal of this project. We developed non-discriminating sample preparation methods for gas chromatography-mas...

Selective Subcritical Water Extraction of Aromatic and Aliphatic Organic Pollutants from Petroleum Industry Soils and Sludges

Supercritical fluids have received much attention for analytical and processing applications. In particular, supercritical carbon dioxide has been used to extract relatively non-polar organics from a variety of environmental matrices, and has also been used for chemical processing. While supercritical carbon dioxide is relatively unreactive and is not an efficient solvent for polar organics, su...

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and strategies for trace-level analysis of polar organic pollutants.

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry using atmospheric pressure ionization (LC-API-MS) has drastically changed the analytical methods used to detect polar pollutants in water. The present status of application of this technique to organic water constituents is reviewed. The selection of the appropriate LC conditions, whether reversed-phase liquid chromatography, ion-pair chromatography, capi...

High-resolution fractionation after gas chromatography for effect-directed analysis.

This research presents an analytical technology for highly efficient, high-resolution, and high-yield fractionation of compounds after gas chromatography (GC) separations. The technology is straightforward, does not require sophisticated cold traps or adsorbent traps, and allows collecting large numbers of fractions during a GC run. The technology is based on direct infusion of a carrier solven...
